Building Friendships at the Asian-Oceanian Congress of Neuroradiology – Singapore, August 2023
There was very strong representation of the World Federation at the August 2023 Asian-Oceanian Congress of Neuroradiology in Singapore. Five members of the Executive Committee were present, with leading presentational roles.
Importantly, the Congress helped the Federation to strengthen its engagement with our members in Asia-Oceania, and to discuss how we can best collaborate and build meaningful partnerships in the future.
Four ExCom members were invited to present to the Executive Committee of the Asian-Oceanian Society of Neck & Head / Neuroradiology Society (AOSNHNR) with encouraging conversations to plan for the future.
Our President, Wan-Yuo Guo, presented a paper detailing his work planning an infrastructure for the application of artificial intelligence in Taiwan. President-Elect, Daniel Birchall, and ExCom committee member Paul Parizel were key Plenary Speakers, Daniel talking on perceptual inattention in Radiology and Paul presenting an innovative SWOT analysis about the future of Neuroradiology. All lectures were well received.
Committee member and ESNR President, Tarek Yousry, presented an invitation to attend the Symposium Neuroradiologicum 2026 to be held in London. Tarek and Past-President of the World Federation, Turgut Tali, then presented an invitation to an innovative collaborative conference to be co-hosted by ESNR and AOSNHNR in Istanbul in 2024.
Two travelling fellows, sponsored by the World Federation, Drs Gehani and Gorolay, were also in attendance at the Congress, both of whom had poster presentations.
Most importantly, the 2023 Singapore conference helped the Federation to continue to build friendly collaborations with member societies in a key part of the Neuroradiology world. Special thanks are due to Professors Lim and Chan in Singapore for their kind invitations and hospitality.

Professor Sirintara Singhara Na Ayudhaya is a neuroradiologist at Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok and a pioneer in the field of Neurointerventional Radiology in Thailand.
Dr. Singhara Na Ayudhaya graduated with honors from Mahidol University’s medical school in Bangkok and was awarded the Certified National Board in Radiology by the Thai Medical Council in 1987. It was during her Residency Training Program that she developed a keen interest in Neurointerventional Radiology and then went to Paris to train further in Interventional Neuroradiology at Bicêtre Hospital, under the guidance of Prof. Lasjaunias – who many will know as perhaps the grandmaster of Interventional Neuroradiology. This training in Paris was the beginning of a long association as she was chosen to be a Co-Director of the Joint Master Degree in Neurovascular diseases between the Universities of Mahidol and Paris Sud from 1999 – 2008. This program later became known as the Diploma course in Neurovascular disease and was later renamed PLANET.
After her initial training in Paris Professor Singhara Na Ayudhaya returned to Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok in 1995, where she was appointed to be the first Chief of the Neurointervention Unit – later renamed to the Division of Neurointerventional Radiology. Here she has held several prominent executive positions including as Chief of Diagnostic Radiology, Vice Chair and then Chair of the Department, as well as the Deputy Director of Ramathibodi Hospital. Since 2012 she has held the position of Deputy Dean for International Relations and Research Collaborations and she is currently the Acting Director of the Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center and Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital.
She continues to lecture and teach at many conferences and meetings and remains as co-director of the PLANET conference. The program is a result of a collaboration between Tufts University (USA), University of Toronto (Canada), and Ramathibodi hospital (Thailand). More than 600 students have graduated from this program in over 50 countries from around the world.
Professor Singhara Na Ayudhaya is a world-known specialist in interventional neuroradiology, and respected contributor at academic meetings of the world societies of Neurointervention and neuroradiology.
Professor Singhara Na Ayudhaya co-founded The Association of Thai Interventional Neuroradiology in 2008 and served as President for three terms. She has been a senior member of Asian-Australasian Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (AAFITN) since 2000 and also served as president of that society from 2010 to 2012. and was President of World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology from 2015-2017.
Throughout her years of dedication to the medical profession, Professor Singhara Na Ayudhaya has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of her contributions. New Book and Film Highlight the Career of Neuroradiology Pioneer
The life and times of Arthur Schüller (1874–1957) are the subject of a new book entitled Arthur Schüller: Founder of Neuroradiology, A Life on Two Continents and an accompanying documentary called Xrays to Exile. Schüller was a distinguished pioneer in the field of neuroradiology. His research rapidly made him the pre-eminent authority on radiology of the skull and brain, particularly after the publication of his monograph on diseases of the head, which became the standard textbook throughout the “classic era” of neuroradiology. He authored another book and more than 300 scientific articles and is credited with the first descriptions of 3 diseases and 3 operations.
Schüller was a refugee, fleeing Austria with his wife and settling in Melbourne in 1939. The narrative of his career is woven into the personal history of his family. Tragically, his later years were darkened by the news from Europe that his 2 sons had perished in a concentration camp.
The biography was written by Keith Henderson (1923–2017) who, as a young neurosurgical trainee at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, met and worked with Schüller. Later, Henderson served for many years as the Head of the Neurosurgery Unit at St. Vincent’s. Keith’s son, Michael, Professor of Surgery at the University of Melbourne, completed the book after his father’s death.
The 30-minute documentary film on Schüller’s career and family history is available for free viewing at https://youtu.be/YhRLobn-Ubw and provides a rich visual backdrop to Schüller’s story.
